I live just outside of Columbia, S.C. and I was interested in rock digging sites within 150 mile distance from home base, traveling north to northeast. I ended up with this map that I made. Here is a numbered list (corresponding with dot numbers on map) of 123 locations and what is to be found at each dig site. To make the dots numbers easier to read I broke up the map into 6 sections (at end of list). There is a certain amount of overlap but I made sure nothing was left out.
At the end of each location there will be one or more numbers, these relate to where you find your treasures; in gravel deposits, streambeds, mine dumps, etc. This list will be called Mineral Location Number List and will follow the location List.
As time allows I will research links to add to the individual sites when available. Now this map was made several years ago, but I believe it still has value. Also, I am working on pictures of each item found in these locations. Photos will be in a different post, but on same page.
This list originated from publications I got from the local Library, at the time I did not write down name of source and don't remember. Sorry :)

ReplyDeleteHi there, Thanks for letting me know the maps worked out okay. I'm working on adding pictures of the rocks and minerals that are found in these locations. Examples in the rough and finished, so you know what to look for. Thanks for the comments, it makes it fun.
DeleteHey I love the information you obviously put a lot of work into it. I was wondering if you could give more info on #111 I live in gaffeny and would love to be able to find that spot.
ReplyDeleteHi there, I really need to do some work on this blog. I did put a lot of work into it at the time. I saw I had a question and couldn't wait to see. #111 evidently didn't include a specific location but the type of terrain to look for. Be sure you check the numbers at the end of the #111 listing as a guide to the mineral location numbers. I've started a new way to find sites. Old prospectors books that have been republished. Some have handmade maps of sites that are forgotten or no longer being worked. Found a couple of books on Amazon. Thanks for checking out the site. You may have inspired me to get some stuff new on here. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks I love digging and this is an awesome site to get my hopes up on finding something. I will continue to check in. Happy digging
DeleteHello Pammy, ive enjoyed your page very much so, thank you for this gem of a journey :). I was a resident of Asheville, NC for two years until a few months ago. I'll be returning for spring semester and super stoked to explore your findings. Thanks to my wonderful friend Gus, I've been introduced to the beautiful narnia of digging. It's become a great passion of mine. I'm currently visiting SC, would you happen to know anywhere to dig within a 60 mile radius of Charleston?
ReplyDeleteLove your taste in music. Frank Zappa is someone you probably enjoy. Thanks for the hard work. I am familiar with some of the sites but not some that are close to me. Closed sites increase yearly . I have a couple sites that I would share if interested. Thanks again.
ReplyDeleteHi, I live in the Asheville area and I am having trouble locating the Alexander rock hound locations. You say near balsam gap but when I try to search for that it takes me to the BRP in Waynesville area. If you are trying to make this list for other people to use I would advise adding coordinates to any hard to find locations so Google Maps can directly pull them up.
ReplyDeleteThank you for this awesome list! I will be sure to check a lot of these places out!
Are these places open to the public? I am interested in henrys knob
